The Island is an unparalleled destination for people seeking new and unforgettable experiences and adventures only true Boricuas can offer. Yes, in Puerto Rico, locals are known as Boricuas, a word derived from Borinquen – the name given to the Island by the indigenous Taínos.

But Boricua is more than just a name; it is a mindset and way of life. It honors the Island’s heritage, the spirit, the flavor, and the rhythms you’ll feel when you visit. And as we invite you to Live Boricua, we’ll share four places where you can embrace the call, discover Puerto Rico, and find that same spirit in yourself.

Note: These locations are safe to visit but require some physical activity. Travelers most have be in good-average physical condition when visiting.

Playa Escondida

It’s got to be a secret if it has the word “hidden” in its name, right? Playa Escondida in the eastern town of Fajardo literally means “hidden beach” and is a real gem nestled in the most remote corner of another beach named Seven Seas – a more popular spot. It takes an easy 15–20-minute hike to reach the beautiful gold-dust sand with soft waves. The best part? It is away from the noise and bustle, so grab a couple of friends with a neverita (a cooler) to enjoy this wonderful remote spot.

Bosque de Pinos

Nestled between the hills and curves of La Cordillera Central (Puerto Rico’s central mountains) is a pine forest in the coffee town of Jayuya. Follow the trails just outside the coveted Toro Negro State Forest, and you’ll find the perfect spot for reconnecting with nature and unplugging the city life – just you, the pines, and some singing endemic birds. Bring your camera; you’ll want to capture the views forever.

Isla Mata la Gata

La Parguera is a fisher community in Lajas, located in the southwestern part of Puerto Rico, where you can enjoy various aquatic activities, from snorkeling to kayaking, diving, parasailing, and more. It is the departure point of many cays and islets in the south. One is Isla Mata la Gata, a cay just a short boat ride from the pier. Enjoy a pristine natural pool surrounded by mangroves and trees. You’ll surely feel like a wanderer seeking a hidden treasure.

Playa Pastillo

Surf town Isabela is booming with cool shores to catch waves, but a lesser-known cove is Playa Pastillo, surrounded by lush trees and palms that contrast with towering limestone cliffs. Although this beach is not ideal for swimming, it is a great spot to unwind with a book, soak in the sun, and enjoy the tropical breeze. You can find hollow entrances along the cliffs for privacy, and during the summer months, you can access Isabela’s famed Cueva de las Golondrinas (Swallow’s Cave).
